Luis Alonzo-Barkigia

Luis Alonzo-BarkigiaLuis Alonzo-Barkigia was born in Tijuana, Mexico and grew up in San Diego, California. He is engaged in a cross-disciplinary practice that includes performance, video and sculpture. Fascinated by man’s ingenuity and achievements, Alonzo-Barkigia explores history in order to celebrate the aspiration and folly of grand human endeavor. The artist employs a playful cynicism to investigate issues of language and identity as it pertains to the individual and the collective self. His sculptural work often references detritus and decay as an ongoing investigation into the legacy of symbols and entities.

Alonzo-Barkigia studied under Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle and Kerry James Marshall at the University of Illinois at Chciago. He also studied as an exchange student at the Malmoe Academy of Art, Sweden. He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally at the Malmoe Art Museum (Sweden), The Girl’s Club (Florida) and the Museo Universitario del Chopo (Mexico).

Luis Alonzo-Barkigia lives and works in New York City.
