White Box presents
Opening Reception:
White box is pleased to present Recent Drawings at THE ANNEX. This exhibition by Portuguese artists, Jorge Nesbitt and Glória Oliveira consists in a selection of drawings from their recent artistic production. The drawings of Glória Oliveira express the nature of objects and figures that report us to forms and subjects of a symbolical background. The economy of the gesture that constructs the form is not concerned with being descriptive leaving the spectator to find layers of meaning. The drawings of Jorge Nesbitt reflect a process appropriation of categories and forms of art through the manipulation of existing printed images. The work is based on connecting what we recognize as culturally artistic in a historic sense and the present time. These artists are searching for and developing a response to problems that contemporary art is debating itself with through specific forms and symbols. Glória Oliveira and Jorge Nesbitt represent two different generations of artists developing work in this specific context, creating an interesting contrast between different gender perspectives.
