WHITE BOX is proud to present Peripheries of the
Body
, the curatorial U.S. debut of Pedro Cruz and
Miguel Hernández. This multimedia exhibition features
six emerging, southern Spanish artists working outside
the cultural mainstream in the region of Murcia. The
subject that binds them is the problem of the body in
art. Far from being an issue that has been overcome,
it has only grown more relevant with the passing of
time.

The contemporary crisis of an engorged image-
spectacle has imposed upon us a body-spectacle
capable of penetrating the collective imagination to the
point where it is deforming all aspects of our lives,
prostituting what had been most sacred: privacy. Our
privacy has suddenly been "exposed" and degrades
as a second-hand image. These artists from Murcia
have proposed strategies to deny and subvert the
hegemony of the so-called image-spectacle by
exalting the body as the primary center of reflection,
practice, and controversy.
