THAT / CELA / DAT & CO.
16 October – 27 October 2001
“That/Cela/Dat” is a video projection
work that is built of precise durations of single words presented
one after another on three screens in three languages.
It’s a son of my 1982 film “So Is
This.”
“That…” is also about This.
“That” is how one refers, later, to what one identifies
in the present, as “this.”
This word will become that word.
The “same” text is presented simultaneously, in sync,
in English, French, and Dutch.
There is one giant screen and two small ones. The
text, which is 17 minutes long, is shown, looped, in sequence on
each of the screens, i.e., when it’s French on the big screen,
it’s flanked by English and Dutch on the small screens. When
it becomes English on the big screen, it’s flanked by Dutch
and French on the small screens, etc.
While the 1982 “So Is This” was designed
for a seated theatre audience, “That/Cela/Dat” specifically
concerns and addresses a standing, ambulatory gallery audience.

Michael Snow’s triple video-projection installation
“THAT / CELA / DAT” is accompanied by several other
works, including “Sheep”, a new video-work; Still Living,
a framed photo-work; and Observer, an installation.
